The Seymour Salmonid Society runs the Seymour River Fish Hatchery and Education
Centre. The Society was formed in 1987 when the British Columbia
Institute of Technology turned over the responsibility of running the hatchery
to our newly-created society. The society has a working relationship with the
Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Metro Vancouver, and many
schools, colleges, businesses and other conservation groups.
The society also relies on the continuing support of our
many volunteers, sponsors, and members. The hatchery is situated in the
beautiful Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve in North Vancouver B.C. It plays a
vital role in sustaining fish stocks and creating fish habitat which have both
been declining since the construction of the Seymour Falls Dam.
Although the dam ensures that residents in the Vancouver
area have good, clean drinking water it has taken away 20 miles of fish habitat;
a loss of habitat that represents about 60% of the river and 90% of their
original spawning grounds. Help us restore the Seymour by becoming a
member.
